The Markham Garden and Horticulture Society, growing since 1923, brings fellow gardeners together monthly to provide an opportunity to show flowers fruit and vegetables grown in our own gardens,to bring fellow lovers of gardening together, and to compete in flower arranging classes. We offer opportunities for gardeners to exchange ideas and techniques, and a forum for speakers to provide gardening-related information. You do not have to have a garden to be a member, just a love of flowers. As well, plant sales, summer garden tours and organized bus trips are a regular part of our program.
Meetings: Meetings are held on the fourth Monday of each month except July, December and January. Join us at 8 p.m. in the Auditorium at 22 Water Street in Markham. Everyone is welcome at our meetings. Refreshments are served after the speaker.
Special Events: We kickoff our year with pot-luck dinner on the fourth Monday in February at 6:30PM followed by a speaker at 8PM.
Each spring, in early May, our popular outdoor plant sale is held at one of our member's home.
Each June, every second year, our bus tour takes us to visit beautiful gardens in Ontario. We are often lucky enough to be given access to private gardens. Lunch at a country inn or restaurant is included in the outing. It is a wonderful day trip out.
In even numbered years in July, we host a Garden Tour, visiting several of Markham's best gardens. The 1998 tour was a great success, where we visited several gardens which had been entered for judging under the Markham Township "Communities in Bloom" competition. A Markham Garden and Horticultural Society Member won FIRST. Markham went on to win First Prize in the Provincial and then the Canadian National Competition and we were chosen as one of six to enter the international World Communities in Bloom in which we placed First for the Most Environmentally Sensitive and Managed Community. What an honor!
Other special events occur sporadically throughout the year. Please attend our meetings to hear more about our next exciting event!
