After being identified as Region 6 (1920 - 1927) and Region 15 (1928 - 1938), Region 16 of the American Iris Society (AIS) came into being in late 1938. The aim of the society was to promote iris and encourage hybridizers to produce varieties that are adaptable to climatic conditions in Canada.

At the 2010 AIS National Convention the Board of Directors dissolved Region 16 effective 6 November 2010. AIS members and Affiliates in Canada were assigned as members of AIS Regions as specified below.

· Yukon and British Columbia to Region 13 (www.aisregion13.org)

· NWT, Nunavut Territory, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba to Region 21 (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/region21-iris/)

· Ontario and Quebec to Region 2 (www.aisregion2.org)

. Newfoundland/Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island to Region 1 (http://www.irisgarden.org/reg1main.htm)
