The
views was so commanding here, looking out from the high downland down into the
valley...there has been a house on this site since the 12th century, but in 1816 it was
destroyed and this Regency Villa built between 1821 and 1823. In 1906 it was sold to
Captain Ronald & Mrs Margaret Greville. She had social ambitions and needed a garden
that could entertain the likes of Edward VII and other members of the Marlborough House.
The house had 9 rooms open and all were equally impressive with their gold gilding, fine
artwork and priceless porcelain and silver.
