October 25
Woke up this morning to the sounds of ducks on the lake along with other birds. My room has a balcony overlooking the lake and one of the most photographed islands and castle. All around us are mountains covered in autumn glory. Breakfast is good and filling but this time the coffee tastes different..kind of nutty but delicious with hot milk. The sun is starting to dissolve the morning fog over the lake. We set off at 9 a.m. to visit the Bled Golf & Country Club, then a ride around the lake up to Bled Castle, then a quick stop at the Grand Hotel Toplice hotel, then we were taken out on boats called pletnjas to Bled Island. As soon as we got onto the island a cordial was waiting for us. Then we had free time to wander around before heading back in the pletnjas to enjoy lunch.
I continued to wander around Lake Bled and just enjoy the little nooks and crannies that I found along the way…the next morning after packing up I went out again to take a few more pictures. The picture of the chess set is called “Chess by Jane Boljka’ it portrays famous PIRC defense named after Slovenian chess grand master Vasja Pirc. What has impressed me about Slovenia in general is the amount of plant material. So many homes have gardens, but mostly edible gardens. Yes, there were flowers as well, trusty geraniums that seem to love it whether they are in France or Slovenia, but these people grow food to eat..then I sat down at an outside café for a pizza from Pizzerija Rikli…it was delicious and a nice way to end the trip…onward home!
Hope you have enjoyed your visit! A heartfelt thank you to Nina Knific at Slovenia Tourism and her group for putting together such a memorable trip for us!
